A Strong Winter for Hen Hud Athletes Highlighted by a Section 1 Bowling Threepeat
For the third straight year, the Hendrick Hudson boys bowling team is a Section 1 champion.
The Sailors won the Division II sectional title, outpacing runner-up Pearl River by a whopping 883 pins. Senior Tyler Muranaka bowled a 1,413 series, which was the high series of the Section 1 Championships — including all schools in Division I and II. Fellow Sailor seniors Billy Moretti, Ethan Bromley and Mark Libonati all joined Muranaka in the Top 16 of the event.
“The boys’ enthusiasm has just been awesome,” coach Kris Abel said. “They set out on this mission. This is my first time coaching this year, but these boys almost don’t need a coach. They are so motivated right now.”
Their next step will be to compete for a state championship on March 8 at AMF Strike N Spare Lanes in Syracuse.
“That’s 100% the goal,” Abel said. “They have a great shot at it. If they can keep the motivation they have now, they can do anything. They should be so proud of themselves.”Although the season is still ongoing, it continued a strong winter for Hen Hud athletes.
Sophomore gymnast Maggie Johannsen won two individual Section 1 championships on February 8, finishing first in the vault and the floor exercise. She was also second on the uneven bars and fourth on the balance beam, which helped her place second overall in Section 1.
Johannsen’s results allowed her to qualify for the state championships for a third straight year; she will compete on March 2 at Clarence High School, which is located in a suburb of Buffalo. She also played a central role in a combined team of athletes from Hen Hud, Somers, Yorktown, John Jay-Cross River, Ossining and Pawling, winning a third straight Section 1 gymnastics team title.
The Hen Hud girls ski team also won a Section 1 team championship on February 15 at Hunter Mountain. Sisters Eleni, Rotini and Yorgia Schattman led the way for the Sailors.
Earlier this month, the indoor track team earned a pair of Section 1 Class B championships. Seniors Alex Wong (55-meter hurdles) and Demetrius Wells (triple jump) took first in their events.
